Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements in Pennsylvania*

Pennsylvania is a no-fault state. This means that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all drivers to have both medical benefits and liability car insurance in order to own and operate a vehicle. Here are the minimum limits you’ll need on your PA car insurance policy.

Medical Benefits

If you’re in an auto accident and anyone covered by your policy is injured, medical benefits will help pay the medical bills. Pennsylvania state law requires residents to have a minimum limit of $5,000 of coverage.

Bodily Injury Liability

Bodily injury liability insurance covers you if you’re ever in an accident in which someone else was hurt and you were found at fault. The minimum limit in Pennsylvania is $15,000/$30,000. That’s $15,000 if one person is injured in an accident and $30,000 if multiple people are injured in one accident.

Property Damage Liability

If you’re at fault for a car accident in which someone else’s property was damaged, property damage liability insurance will help pay for it. The state of Pennsylvania requires a minimum limit of $5,000 of coverage. However, some car insurance policies will provide a single $35,000 limit, which covers the minimum requirements of both bodily injury and property damage liability.
