Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements in Wisconsin*

To drive legally in the state of Wisconsin you must have the minimum liability auto insurance coverage. This means, that if you’re ever in an accident for which you’re found at fault, your insurance policy must cover injuries or damages up to a specific limit set by the state.

We’ll explain a little more about these minimum limits below.

Property Damage

Wisconsin State law requires your auto insurance policy to cover a minimum of up to $10,000 per accident for property damage. This includes any damage you may cause to another person’s vehicle or other property. It does not, however, cover damage done to your own vehicle. For that, consider adding collision or comprehensive coverage to your car insurance policy.

Bodily Injury (One Person)

Bodily injury liability insurance refers to the minimum limit your auto insurance policy must cover in the event someone is injured or killed in an auto accident that you caused. In Wisconsin, the limit is $25,000 per accident if only one other person is injured or dies as a result of a crash.

Bodily Injury (Two or More People)

If you’re found at fault for an accident in which two or more people were injured or killed, then the state of Wisconsin requires your car insurance to cover up to $50,000 to help pay for medical and/or funerary expenses. Once again, that’s $50,000 per accident.

Proof of Insurance in Wisconsin

In addition, you must be able to provide proof of car insurance if you’re ever pulled over by a police officer or at the scene of an accident in which you’re involved. If you fail to show proof of auto insurance during a traffic stop or at an accident, you could be fined up to $10. And providing fake or fraudulent insurance documents could get you fined up to $5,000.
